WELCOME MESSAGES

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL ORGANISING AND SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE OF THE CONFERENCES

Welcome to Paphos, Cyprus, EU the host town of the 28th ICOC, 10th RAHMS and 7th ICOAR international conferences for 2019 and previous European capital of culture 2017. Papho’s history spans through thousands of years and has many natural, cultural and ancient attractions. It has been known in ancient times as the birthplace of Aphrodite or Venous, the goddess of love, who was born from the foam of the sea waves. Conference participants will have the opportunity to visit the ancient sites, museums and other areas which are of cultural and natural sightseeing interest.

The venue of the conference is situated on a beach area near the centre of Paphos and a walking distance from shops and restaurants. As in previous conferences the tranquillity of the venue and the excellent Cypriot cuisine and hospitality will be stimulating for a successful conference in relaxing surroundings.

Cyprus is well known for the high incidence of inherited diseases such as Thalassaemia and Friedreich Ataxia. It is estimated that one in six Cypriots is a carrier of thalassaemia and one in a thousand Cypriots is a thalassaemia patient. In the last four decades preventative measures and educational efforts have diminished the birth of thalassaemia children in Cyprus. Substantial improvement in the quality of life and a sharp decrease in the mortality and morbidity of existing thalassaemia patients have been achieved since the introduction of the deferiprone / deferoxamine ICOC protocol. The new epidemiological and other data suggest that thalassaemia has changed from a fatal to a chronic disease in Cyprus. Thalassaemia patients in Cyprus are active professionals, many have families and some are now becoming grandparents. New emerging medical challenges for many thalassaemia patients are the increasing immunological reactions to transfusions and third age diseases.

The control of births of patients with Friedreich Ataxia, which is endemic in the Paphos district, is almost identical to that of thalassaemia and involves the screening for carriers (heterozygotes) among premarital couples and providing prenatal diagnosis. Chelation therapy using deferiprone is currently the most promising therapy for Friedreich Ataxia, which is an untreatable inherited disease.
The scientific programme will be complemented with social activities, entertainment and excursions. The local organising committee hope that all participants will have stimulating scientific sessions, memorable experience and an enjoyable and relaxing time in Cyprus.

Dr Annita Kolnagou MD

Director of the Thalassaemia Unit, Paphos General Hospital and Postgraduate Research Institute, Paphos, Cyprus.

THE PRESIDENT OF INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF CHELATORS AND METALS (ISOCAM)

Cyprus is a special island in the Mediterranean that for many years suffered the crushing and detrimental effects of the hemoglobinopathy, beta-thalassaemia major.

However, through the work of individuals such as Professor Kontoghiorghes, the health of many thalassaemia patients has markedly improved. This is largely the result of the discovery of orally effective iron chelators such as Deferiprone and others.

As such, it is only fitting that Cyprus remains the international location for hosting conferences that focus on iron, iron loading and the pathogenesis of iron! Additionally, the warm Mediterranean sunshine and holiday atmosphere is an exceptional bonus for all visitors!

For over 25 years, the organizing committees have excelled in preparing exceptional and relaxed meetings to examine the role of targeting metals in the treatment of a variety of metals including iron and also copper.

As President of the International Society of Chelators and Metals (ISOCAM), I warmly welcome all delegates and friends to Cyprus to join the 28th ICOC -10th RAHMS -7th ICOAR Conference.

In contrast to many conferences, this joint conference has a long and well established history with the discussion of topical areas being the heart of the proceedings. These subjects include thalassaemia, iron overload disease, iron metabolism, iron chelation particularly in iron overload conditions, but also a range of related general areas that are currently topical. In fact, iron and copper chelation is now being considered more widely in patient treatment with several agents in multi-centre clinical trials for the treatment of cancer. The conference also discusses a broad range other areas of topical interest including drug design and development, aging, reactive oxygen species generation, inflammation, neuro-degenerative and cardio-degenerative diseases, etc.

The organising committee has ensured time for ample discussion after lectures, but also time for discussion is incorporated into several round table sessions. Young investigators are especially encouraged to join the conference and present their exciting research!

The broad overarching aim of the meeting is to stimulate new advances and to support international collaboration between scientists that will improve patient treatment

The International Organising and Scientific Committees have developed a memorable and stimulating program and we look forward to enjoying the warm Mediterranean climate!

THE PRESIDENT OF THE TENTH RECENT ADVANCES IN HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCE

- SECTION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE-

I welcome all of you to attend the Tenth International Conference on Recent Advances in Health and Medical Sciences (10th RAHMS) in Paphos, Cyprus. We joined this conference since the first RAHMS, and introduced the newly developing trends in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), mainly about acupuncture and Chinese medicine progress every year.

Our team this year comes from different Chinese medical centers with long experience in the treatment of many conditions using TCM and also the lessen of pain with traditional and modern acupuncture methods (Low level laser therapy) of different laser wavelengths. Special areas of treatment applications include stoke, low back pain, benign prostate hypertrophy, intercostal pain, reduce postpartum weight retention. The implications of using the National Health Insurance Research Database for Traditional Chinese Medicine Research will also be discussed.

It is my pleasure to invite all the guests in the 10th International Conference on Recent Advances in Health and Medical Sciences which take place in this beautiful sightseeing place in Paphos, Cyprus.

I wish all of you will have a nice and pleasant time in Cyprus.

Dr Sheng-Feng Hsu MD

THE PRESIDENT OF THE 10th RECENT ADVANCES IN HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCES - SECTION ON BIOACTIVE PHYTOCHEMICALS FROM TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL AND FOOD PLANTS

On behalf of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, I am delighted and honoured to extend a warm welcome to all delegates from various countries, for the 10th RAHMS that will take place in Paphos, Cyprus, from June 28th to July 3rd, 2019.

In particular, I wish to introduce the Section on ‘Bioactive Phytochemicals from Traditional Medicinal and Food Plants’, which focuses on phytochemicals and plant extracts relevant for human health. The use of natural products as therapeutics is deep rooted in human cultures and societies, representing an unlimited source of new drugs in all major disease areas. From nutrition to pharmacology, plant kingdom represents a rich and unlimited source of bioactives with multiple biochemical and molecular targets, both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including receptors, ion channels, enzymes, structural macromolecules and nucleic acids. Consequently, plant products interfere with a number of cell processes such as cell cycle, mitosis, signaling pathways, protein synthesis and folding, programmed cell death, energy metabolism and so on. Not least, because of the unique nature of phytochemicals and because plant tissues contain hundreds of bioactive molecules, there exists a lower risk of selecting phytochemical-resistant pathogens compared with conventional pharmaceuticals.

To conclude, I wish to express my gratitude to both delegates and Organizing Committee. In particular, I am grateful to George Kontoghiorghes, who instituted and organized the RAHMS conferences: under his dynamic leadership, RAHMS is in its first decade! I am convinced that your participation in the 10th RAHMS will be constructive and I wish you a pleasant stay in Cyprus.

We look forward to meeting you,

Dr Marcello Iriti

Professor, Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Milan State University, Milan, Italy

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF 28th ICOC, 10th RAHMS and 7th ICOAR CONFERENCES

On behalf of the Local, International Organising and Scientific Committees, I would like to welcome you to the 28th International Concference on Chelation (ICOC) for the treatment of Thalassaemia, Cancer and other Diseases of metal and free radical imbalance and toxicity,  the 10th International Conference on Recent Advances in Health and Medical Sciences (RAHMS), and the 7th International Conference on Oncology and Anticancer Rersearch (ICOAR), which will take place in Paphos, Cyprus, from the 28th June to the 3rd July, 2019.

It is now 30 years since the 1st ICOC in London, UK, where oral iron chelation therapy was globally introduced and discussed. This year the ICOC conference will discuss the end of a period and breakthrough in iron chelation therapy namely the complete treatment of transfusional iron overload with Deferiprone and Deferiprone / Deferoxamine combination but also the initiation of the application of chelation in many diseases of focal iron toxicity. The development of chelating drugs is rapidly advancing with possible use in the treatment of many metal toxicities but also cancer, malaria, microbial, renal, neurodegenerative and many other diseases such as those linked to free radical pathology which includes almost all diseases of tissue damage and also ageing. The impact of nutrition, environmental factors, traditional Chinese medicine in health and disease will also be discussed during the conferences.

The ICOC/ RAHMS/ ICOAR joint conferences is an open platform event used for stimulating research and open discussions in a many scientific and academic areas from chemistry to medicine. It is one of the few academic conferences with publications of its proceedings in international journals. The conference addresses the latest developments in health and medical sciences and also ethical issues, orphan diseases, controversies, commercial interference in academia and medicine, patient rights etc, all of which are essential for world health.  Distinguished colleagues, scientists, medical practitioners, health professionals and students from all over the world will gather to present and discuss their scientific findings and also of other issues related to science and health.

The role of academia in health, drug design and development, medical and scientific publishing etc and the need to institute organisations for the management of such activities by academics for the benefit of academics, patients and the public at large will also be discussed. In this context, the global perspective of health, disease and environmental issues, require international cooperation to make the design, development and implementation of international health policies possible.

Similar to previous conferences, we will be organising social and other events and also a constructive, high standard scientific and medical meeting in Cyprus.
